According to the American Medical Association, the southern part of the United States is facing an HIV epidemic, where nearly 50% of new cases of HIV are being diagnosed. Part of the problem, according to Laurie Dill, MD, an internist in Montgomery, Ala., and medical director of Medical AIDS Outreach of Alabama, is that “people thought we had HIV/AIDS taken care of [in the United States].”
